Many modern breeding preferences have led to serious, torturous results for dogs. Health and welfare take a backseat to the priority of appearance, regardless of the consequences. While this BBC documentary involves the breeding community in Britain, the same issues are of concern here in the U.S. This is painful to watch, but eye-opening and for me at least – infuriating…
The BBC aired this documentary in 2008, with a strong backlash from the breeding community. Unfortunately, most of the issues (and attitudes) addressed in this piece are still commonplace. If you haven’t watched this yet – you’ll find it very interesting and enlightening.
Does your dog have a breed-specific illness or health condition that may be the result of irresponsible breeding?
Thank you so much for having the courage to post this! I have some very unpopular views about breeding that I won’t share right now, but needless to say, I wish everyone could/would watch this.
Right now my breed is lucky as we are quite rare and bred almost exclusively on demand with waiting times. We are also extremely healthy with the couple former health issues almost completely gone from the breed. We don’t like the over breeding of some dogs, it is just too much.We are also just fine with shelter mixed breeds, it just happened that Mom ended up with purebreds but we are both healthy.
