We all complain about our discomforts, inconveniences…heaven knows, I’m guilty of more than my share of griping. Right now, much of the country is under heavy wintry weather, be it snow, icing, high winds, frigid temperatures. And we’re often not comfortable with such weather. But imagine if you didn’t have heat. You didn’t even have a roof over your head – or a warm bed to hunker down in to at night. You were homeless. We can all help those less fortunate than ourselves. Pets of the Homeless offers an opportunity that’ll surely be easy for you to do so.
We’ve written in the past about Pets of the Homeless – an organization that is, without question, tops on my list of favorites. There is no cause more dear to my heart than that which helps the unfortunate, vulnerable beings living without the comforts of home – be they human or domesticated animal.
For some who live on the mean streets, a pet is the closest friend and confidant they’ve got, and the reason they keep going. And they provide to these pets the supreme loyalty, trust and friendship that dogs show to people, but which man is usually not capable of returning. What an inspirational bond!
Pets of the Homeless is an organization that provides pet food and veterinary care to pets of the homeless. Without their services, these pets would go hungry, or their humans would in order to keep them fed. These pets would not get the basic care they need – vaccines, spay/neuter, basic wellness care. Pets of the Homeless also awards grants to homeless shelters that provide for the homeless to keep their pets in crates next to them, encouraging the homeless to come in from the cold.
Right now, there is a photo contest that you can participate in. Through their Facebook page, Pets of the Homeless is offering us all a chance to pitch in, to help in raising the funds needed to provide these essential services to pets of the homeless. There are some touching photos to choose from – and for $1 you can vote for a photo. You are not limited in how many votes you cast, each vote is one dollar each. All the money you donate is tax deductible.
Head on over to the Pets of the Homeless Facebook page, cast your vote(s) – and help those who are without question “less fortunate” than us. They may be vulnerable, homeless, and destitute – but they are wealthy in their wisdom of the healing and sustaining powers of the human-animal bond, and in the extraordinary love they share with their pet.
We should all be that kind of fortunate, don’t you think?

Although I usually don’t display images without consent or at least credit, I thought the power of these images helps to convey the urgent need to help these pets. I will gladly remove them or give credit if made known.)

You’re most welcome, Maggie – this is, in my opinion, something very important to share. It breaks my heart, too!

They sound like a great idea that has come into fruition. I’m going to cast my vte as soon as I leave a comment here, Kim.
You know… I was watching the local news the other day and was somehow surprised, yet not surprised at the amount of people living under bridges and cardboard boxes in a big city not far from my small town. These homeless folks didn’t have much, but you could tell they highly valued what they did have. To make matters worse, the temperatures are freezing here, in Indiana, literally. It wasn’t long after the previous story about these homeless people that the next day updated the story, showing how those same people were helped out by a charity organization within the city.
Not everyone who is without a home and meal will be that lucky this winter but everyone who does have all that they could ever want or need, can do their part to help.

Very well said, Kelly!

Though I follow them on FB, have not seen this photo contest in my feed. This is one of my favorite organizations. Thank you so much for your post!

That darn Facebook – just when you’re trusting that you’ll get the latest from your liked pages, it lets you down. It’s still showing only a percentage of posts in a typical feed. Happy to have this post for you then!

This is such a great organization and I am so glad it exists! There are so many intersections between human and animal welfare, especially when it comes to poverty. It’s a hard thing to face, but homelessness can happen to anyone and we are all affected. Thank you for sharing this vital cause.

Hi Y’all,
What a moving post…when you think about the comforts and food we have on a daily basis…but how these animals and humans comfort each other in their suffering…thank you for sharing.
