In light of the event recently publicized about the 100 sled dogs killed in Canada – when the company no longer wanted them – an international candlelight vigil has been organized for the one-year anniversary date of the horrific acts of senseless violence against those dogs. The plans for a vigil ceremony span the globe, and are spreading rapidly.
Originating through Facebook with a plea to join in peacefully honoring these dogs, the page currently has 843 fans. There are commitments for a vigil in parts of Canada, the U.S., and even South Africa and Australia. Not only will this vigil help those who wish to honor the dogs, it may serve as well to honor all dogs whose lives have been cut way too short simply due to human greed and ignorance.
An additional result of these vigils could be to enlighten those who are not only unaware of what happened last April, but also what continues to occur by businesses using animals for profit without regard to their welfare. There are many who hope for some laws, or tighter restrictions, that would serve the best interests of animals. Although there are plenty of businesses that incorporate the use of animals wisely and humanely, there are still too many that do not. For that alone, we need awareness, discussion, change.
You can find more information about the candlelight vigil concept at the page on Facebook. The page has just offered a sample letter you might use to send a request to your own mayor. The one, small comforting idea about what happened to all those dogs is a hope by many that it need not ever happen again.
Love the idea of a vigil. A kind fitting thing to do for those poor beautiful animals.
You describe it perfectly!
Thank you for keeping this tragedy in the spotlight so more people can do something more. I am still so outraged! But a peaceful tribute is a great idea.
Rest in peace beautiful dogs.
