A year ago, 9 year-old Sophia Rotger of Birmingham, Alabama, learned of families relinquishing their pets because of economic struggles and the inability to feed them. She embarked on the creation of a pet food pantry, Birmingham Pet Pantry. Along with her sponsor, Premier Pet Supply, she delivered 7,000 lbs of pet food to the Gleaner Food Bank Pantry – after just three months!
This year, the Birmingham Pet Pantry is coordinating with the Birmingham Youth Assistance and the annual Bark at Berkshire’s kids’ dog show, with a goal of collecting 10,000 lbs of pet food. Participants and spectators alike are encouraged to bring pet food donations to the event, which will be held February 13th. The annual dog show highlights tricks, costumes, behaviors – and this year anyone who brings a donation has a chance to win. Talk about a win-win!
And what inspiration – in the form of a 9 year-old girl! Odds are great the dog show will be a howling success.
Dear Hoomans,
Please help by donating pet food to your local food bank. Can you imagine having to give up your pet because you can’t feed them?? You would be helping people AND pets by keeping them where they are loved and happy.
Thank you!

I love it when children get involved to help the animals. First Mimi Ausland of Freekibble fame, and more recently Karlie Smick and this girl. They are all wonderful.
