Sparky is a cat with a very special story, for both his dim past and his current “position”. What I find truly inspiring, in addition to the positive effect his life is having on so many homeless pets, is just how his circumstances show us the possibilities of hope and good for “less-than’perfect” pets.
With the help of his servants (talented humans), Sparky has become the star of art, literature, music – even toys – for the benefit of pets in shelters and animal charities. And it all began as a spark of inspiration when an artist, Diana Madaras, saw him in a less than cheerful disposition – outfitted in a Santa hat. Another cat, the artist’s very own handicapped Klondike, joined Sparky in a story Diana began to write.
For the two cats, one who formerly had health issues and one who was handicapped, to defy the world’s expectations of “purrfect” and become such great ambassadors of hope for their fellow creatures, is a story in itself. A portion of the profits from their merchandise are donated. In 1999, Madaras established Art for Animals, a nonprofit organization, for the benefit of homeless and abused animals including cats, dogs, horses and wildlife. In its first ten years, the organization donated $150,000!!! Some of the consistent “advisors” include big names like Michael Graves and Mary Tyler Moore.
Enjoy the video, and consider donating or patronizing businesses that contribute to Art for Animals. I sure will!
